Iowa State’s First Astronaut Clayton Anderson [video]

By Daniel Wise

Howe Hall’s Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium roared with applause as astronaut and Iowa State Alumna Clayton Anderson took the stage to share his journey from ISU into orbit.
During the hour long event Anderson shared photos, video, and humor from his experience in 2007 aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis and his 152 days on the International Space Station. He even shared a story about meeting President George Bush after his mission.

“Here I on the tarmac, at noon the next day, 24 hours after landing, standing on the tarmac in front of Air Force One with my family waiting to meet the President.” Clayton recalls in disbelief, feeling honored when the President looked him right in the eye and said, “Clayton, that was a great mission!”

After Mr. Anderson finished his discussion about being in orbit he shared pictures taken aboard the International Space Station including the Pyramids of Egypt, the artificial islands of Dubai, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, and pictures of Iowa and Nebraska.

After his speech he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Engineering Department. Anderson has also received Iowa State University’s top honor of Distinguished Alumni.
