Five more bands played intense sets on the third day of this year's Veishea Battle of the Bands wildcard sets.
The first band to play was Sean Bright and the Evicted, whose rock-pop sound was reminiscent of Dave Matthews Band. The band also played a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” that was very similar to Matthews’ version, but with the twist of playing Boyd Tinnsley’s violin parts on guitar.
The unique flavor this added was as ear-catching as the vocals of Bright, who gave his all during every, song even after commenting after his second song that "My voice is about to go out. The first cut is always the deepest."
This wry comment had the audience chuckling.
The band’s second song, "Spin," was dedicated to Bright's friends' delivery of a new baby.
First Time in Print played their intense punk rock to a slightly larger crowd.
"How are the judges out there? Bored? I hope not," joked lead guitarist and vocalist Tom Hannigan. The introductions of fast riffing guitars were met by drums, and the band’s songs took off from there. The band featured two lead vocalists as Hannigan and Kaleb Hahan interchanged their bright and youthful vocals on almost every song. The last song, “American Squalor,” kept up the band’s energetic until the part Hannigan introduced as the “slow and pretty part,” which was still quite beat- and riff- heavy.
Hill Haven Raven’s members hail from several states and "meet in the middle" to rehearse. The band’s sound is an amalgamation of punk and rock with elongated sections in which the drummer keeps on drumming with the guitars provided a clangy backdrop to Travis Hersleff's passionate vocals.
Ruby is a three-piece metal band whose articulate, precise riffs were described by vocalist and guiarist Joe Fiderlick as "math rock." The melodic interaction of the bass and guitar along with the support of the complex drumming sounded much like Tool — an impression reinforced by Fiderlick’s on-key and melodic vocals. The intensity of one song increased for so long, it was hard to imagine how it would end, and when it did, everyone in the crowd seemed taken aback by the band's musicality.
12 Ounce Empty may have been the hardest-rocking band of the night. The band’s metal style was accented in places by the dry vocals of singer Adam Hascall. The theme of the song "Stone Savior" was summed up by Hascall’s line "no matter what, people don't seem to listen to your message." The crowd was headbanging and occasionally moshing to the "vicious" music, and the band joined in the bodily expression.
